MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (ME) @KITPS


The department offers 4 year undergraduate (B. Tech) programme with intake of 120 students and successfully running from academic session 2009-10. Excellent facilities in terms of equipment and staff are available to prepare students as professional Mechanical Engineers with focus on innovation, analysis and development of technologies.

The department organizes various credit corporate training programs, industrial consultancy etc. The department also benefited from lectures from the visiting professor highly experienced senior executives from industries.

  • LABORATORIES
    The department is equipped with the following labs for B.Tech (M E):-
  • WORKSHOP PRACTICE LAB:
    Workshop lab is very useful because it provides a basic knowledge of machines, welding, carpentry and fitting etc. Major Equipment in lab are: Lathe machine, Shaper machine, Surface Grinder, Milling machine, Welding machine for arc and gas welding etc.
  • ENGINEERING MECHANICS LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the basics of trusses and frames, column & struts, deflection of beams, gear trains and strength of materials. Major Equipment in lab are: Universal testing machine (UTM), Brinell hardness testing machine, Izod/Charpy testing machine, models of truss, column & struts, beams (cantilever and simply supported beam) and three hinged arch etc.
  • DIGITAL ELECTRONICS LAB:
    Digital Electronics Laboratory is fully equipped with the required instruments such as C.R.O., Multimeters, signal Generator etc.
  • THERMODYNAMICS LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the fundamentals of formation of steam to generate the power which includes cooling tower, condenser and compressors. Major Equipment in lab are: Low pressure and high pressure boilers (Babcock and Wilcox, Lancashire and Locomotive boiler models), cooling tower, throttling calorimeter, Bomb calorimeter and model of condensers etc.
  • MATERIAL SCIENCE & TESTING LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the basics structure and the properties of materials. Major Equipment in lab are: Computerized digital Microscope, Heat treatment furnace, Polishing machine, Mounting press etc.
  • MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the basics of machines and manufacturing technology. Major Equipment in lab are: Milling machine, Drilling machine, Shaper machine, Lathe machine etc.
  • MACHINE DRAWING/DESIGN LAB:
    The objective of this lab is to innovate mechanical component design, improve design quality, shorten design time, and enhance design education. The design tools developed include design methodology and computer-aided design software systems. Major Equipment in lab are: Computers equipped with Auto-Cad and other designing software’s etc.
  • FLUID MECHANICS LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the fundamentals of properties of fluids and governing equations like continuity, impulse-momentum equation and Bernoulli’s equation. Major Equipment in lab are: Bernoulli’s apparatus, Reynolds apparatus, Impact of jet apparatus, orifice apparatus, orifice meter and venturimeter apparatus, notch apparatus, losses in pipes apparatus, forced vortices apparatus etc.
  • HEAT & MASS TRANSFER LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped with calibrated equipments and enables students to understand the basics modes of heat transfer i.e. conduction, convection and radiation. Major Equipment in lab are: Thermal conductivity of metallic rod apparatus, Thermal conductivity of insulating powder apparatus, Pin-Fin Apparatus, Vertical tube loosing heat under natural convection, emissivity measurement apparatus, Stefan Boltzmann apparatus, parallel and counter flow heat exchanger etc.
  • MEASUREMENT METROLOGY LAB:
    The lab is well equipped and enables students to understand the fundamentals of various measuring instruments. Major Equipment in lab are: LVDT (Linear variable differential transformer), Thermocouple, Bourdon type pressure gauge, Resistance strain gauge, Pneumatic Pressure gauge, Optical devices etc.
  • THEORY OF MACHINES LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the balancing of machine parts statically and dynamically and also used to understand the dynamic behavior of moving objects. Major Equipment in lab are: There are various equipments in this lab like cam-follower mechanism, inversion mechanism, various types of gear & gear train, kinematic links & pairs, belt pulley mechanism, static and dynamic balancing machine, Dynamometer, Centrifugal governor (Watt, Porter and Proell governors), Telescopic gyroscope etc.
  • REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the basics of refrigeration and air conditioning. Major Equipment in lab are: Heat pumps (mechanical and water) and cut- sectional models of Reciprocating and Rotary Refrigerant compressor, Air conditioning test rig etc.
  • FLUID MACHINERY LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the fundamentals of turbine, pumps and ram. Major Equipment in lab are: Francis turbine test rig, Pelton turbine test rig, Centrifugal pump test rig, Gear oil pump test rig, Hydraulic ram etc.
  • CAD/CAM LAB:
    TCAD (Computer Aided Design) provides a convenient mean to create designs for almost every engineering discipline and it also imparts knowledge of modern manufacturing techniques. Major Equipment in lab are: CNC Lathe, CNC milling, Computers equipped with Auto-Cad etc.
  • AUTOMOBILE & IC ENGINES LAB:
    The lab is well-equipped and enables students to understand the basic construction of two stroke and four stroke diesel and petrol engine. The lab also contain basic parts of an engine like carburetor, fuel injection system, engine cooling system etc.Major Equipment in lab are: Two stroke and four stroke diesel and petrol engine, carburetor, different fuel injection system etc.
